External-grade Ethernet cable has a fundamentally different outer jacket construction from internal-grade cable. The polyethylene (PE) jacket used on external-grade CAT5E is resistant to UV radiation, moisture ingress, temperature extremes, and the physical wear of outdoor installation environments. Internal cable with an LSOH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) jacket lacks these outdoor resistance properties and will degrade when exposed to sunlight, wet conditions, and temperature cycling over time.
For IP CCTV installations where the Ethernet cable runs from the network switch or NVR to an external camera position through an outdoor route, along a wall, across a roof space, or through conduit that is open to the environment, external-grade PE-jacketed cable is the correct specification. Using internal cable in this position creates a maintenance liability as the cable outer degrades and the electrical performance of the cable is eventually affected.
Solid copper conductors (as opposed to CCA, copper-clad aluminium) maintain the electrical performance of the cable across the full 305-metre drum without the resistance increase associated with aluminium conductors, which is important for long runs where cable resistance contributes to PoE power delivery and data signal integrity.
The 305m drum provides a standard installation quantity for a project or for stock, covering multiple camera runs from a single drum.
For CCTV installers, network installers, and access control engineers completing external Ethernet cable runs across London and the UK where weatherproof PE-jacketed CAT5E solid copper is the correct specification, this 305m drum provides the full project quantity.
