6-core alarm cable is the intermediate specification between the standard 4-core cable used for basic zone detectors and the 8-core cable used for more complex devices. Many PIR detectors include a tamper circuit, an alarm output, and a 12V power supply requirement that together require 6 conductors: two for power, two for the alarm zone, and two for the tamper circuit.

Running 6-core cable to PIR positions where the installer knows the device will require all six conductors avoids the situation of arriving at a detector position with a 4-core cable that is one pair short of the full device wiring requirement.
