Power over Coax (PoC) is a feature of specific HDCVI cameras and DVRs that allows the camera to be powered through the same coaxial cable that carries the video signal, eliminating the separate power cable run. PoC baluns extend this concept further: they convert the coaxial signal to twisted pair, allowing PoC cameras to run over Cat5e or Cat6 network cable rather than RG59 coax.

This is particularly useful in buildings where structured Cat5e or Cat6 cabling is already installed to the required camera positions: rather than running new coaxial cable alongside the existing network cable, the installer uses the existing Cat cable with the PoC balun pair to carry both the video signal and the camera power.
