A dual element PIR processes signals from two separate pyroelectric sensing elements, and only triggers an alarm when both elements detect a moving heat source simultaneously. This coincidence detection requirement provides substantially better false alarm immunity than a single element PIR: an insect crossing the lens, a heating pipe warming, or a small animal (cat, dog) are far less likely to register as a simultaneous signal on both elements than a human body moving through the detection zone.
