HDMI cable has a practical maximum run length of around 15 metres before signal degradation causes image quality issues. For AV installations in commercial buildings, conference rooms, digital signage, education venues, and hospitality environments where the video source and display are separated by longer distances, an HDMI-over-Cat extender uses standard structured cabling to bridge the distance.
At 150 metres, this extender covers the majority of single-floor commercial installations and most cross-floor distances in multi-storey buildings via existing Cat5e or Cat6 cable infrastructure. The signal is transmitted as a modulated signal over the cable and converted back to HDMI at the receiver unit.
The 1080P (Full HD) resolution support is appropriate for standard commercial and presentation display applications. For 4K UHD sources and displays, a 4K-rated HDMI extender should be specified instead.
Both the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) units are powered by the included power supplies. Power supply placement must be considered during installation: both units require a mains socket in proximity.
For AV and IT installers completing long-distance HDMI distribution over existing structured cable infrastructure across London and the UK, the 150m Cat5e/Cat6 HDMI extender provides the practical extension solution.
